“Everything changes when Jacy Wilbert knocks on the wrong door,” author E.C. Moore prefaces on the cover page of Every Big & Little Wish. When Jacy is the new girl in school, again, she must deal with making friends, establishing a reputation, finding the right social group with which to hang, continue pleasing her mother and tolerating her estranged father’s young girlfriend. All while maintaining her perfect attendance record and keeping her nose clean. None of this is impossible, though. Jacy is accustomed to inserting her existence into the lives of others.
While waiting to be noticed by the popular class at school, Jacy befriends Neil and his “madhouse” family; a mixed breed of blood siblings and half-brothers. Not being one to judge, this doesn’t phase Jacy nor does it deter her from falling in fully-fledged 'like' with Neil. Unfortunately, all that Neil and Jacy attempt in helping Neil’s brothers, Casper and Manny, cannot combat the evils that Casper has inflicted upon the family unit. Casper believes that he is actually the comic book character Spectral and that he is untouchable in his drug-fogged mind. LSD, prostitution, and an assortment of illegal activities find Jacy anxious to accept the loving arms of her own dysfunctional family.
E.C. Moore has created a disturbing analogy of growing up in the early 1970s. Not only must she fight to be a teenager, but she must fight for her life. It is a good indication of a seasoned writer when they can incorporate the complexities of metaphor within the content of a novel. Although the setting is obviously in the past, the themes of abuse and emotion are timelessly relevant. I enjoyed the depth of character development in Every Big & Little Wish. Word choice and description are spot on. I anticipate seeing more from E.C. Moore, especially in the realistic fiction genre.
