Everything I Need to Save My Friend and Doom the Universe by Adrian Speed will take you to the far reaches of the universe and back with a story of friendship, aliens, and the stars. Victoria only wanted to sleep and had no intention of being dragged out of bed. Her best friend had other plans in mind when she dragged Victoria out in the dead of night to check out a fallen star. But as they get a closer look, they discover that this is no ordinary star. No ordinary star has entire galaxies inside it. A moment of curiosity turns into an alien abduction when aliens arrive and take Victoria and Martha into space. The two friends now face a bigger problem as they're drawn into a galactic fight. As they're trained under the command of alien forces, they're determined to find a way to return home.
Adrian Speed creates a world that is rich in writing and a lively tone with a plot based on humor, quirkiness, and aliens. The story takes the idea of alien abduction and creates an epic adventure into space that finds the two friends being trained as knights. The eccentricity of the plot is derived from the character of Victoria and the strength that Speed lends to her voice. The tone of the story has a charming near superhero quality to the world that blends well with the science fiction genre with the inclusion of the Legion of Doom, Central Starship Command, and the Freedom Alliance.
Speed delivers a grounded quality to the story, thanks to the genuineness of Victoria, with thoughts of her family a consistent presence throughout her time with the aliens. The story is centered around the two friends being abducted by aliens but Speed incorporates several layers in the dynamics of the aliens and the two sides vying against each other for the upper hand. Speed delivers a great read that science fiction lovers won't want to put down. Everything I Need to Save My Friend and Doom the Universe is a galactic treat that reaches for the stars with a tale of friendship, perseverance, and the epic journey it takes to make it back home.
