In Nick Iuppa’s Evolution’s Angels, when four children survive separate disasters, their hospital scans reveal a brain structure that scientists at Leland University have never seen before. Dr. Kathleen Kelly studies Melissa Washington, a Rochester shooting survivor; Ángel Rivera, a Tucson ranch boy; Lillie Allonzo, a California fire survivor; and Talley Antone, a reservation girl whose presence links nearby children in a startling way. Their silver eyes, unusual calm, and mind-based abilities draw interest from researchers, then fear from Brad Dockster, a radio host who turns leaked science into a national warning. As families seek safety, developer Charles Hodgson Wolf offers Sanctuary Harbor, a home on the Leland campus. Dr. Kelly must decide who can be trusted before the shelter built for the children becomes the center of a threat.

Nick Iuppa’s Evolution’s Angels is a fantastic novel and leans into its title, linked to the name given to children whose altered brains mark a startling next step in human development. Iuppa does an excellent job of making speculative science feel relatable in the real world's post-truth age. When a photo of little Ángel is changed to make a child look predatory—it's straight out of the current propaganda playbook. It is also totally heartbreaking. I love Dr. Kelly, who is given empathy and agency, treating the children like people, and even trying to honor a frightened preschooler’s wish to stay with her parents. Melissa is also fascinating and has a unique way of speaking up for children. The author breathes life into every part of the novel. Well written and immersive, readers who like true speculative fiction that uses the power of children and the fear factor surrounding change will love this book. Very highly recommended.
