Exile: Book One of The Dark Mirror Trilogy by Sherri Fulmer Moorer is a wonderful science fiction read. The description begins thus: “Dr. Addison Lybrand’s career ends the moment the object she’s tracking vanishes beyond the heliopause.” What follows after the disappearance of the object is the unfolding of the narrative in ways that keep you reading right through to the end. The author’s combination of the science-fiction element of this story with the lives of and insights into the various main characters is seamless. I enjoyed the way their individual skills and their personalities meshed to the degree that, as a reader, I could, at times, anticipate how a given character would react to and handle some of the different crises that occurred. Plus, I always enjoy a sci-fi that doesn’t overlook the human element. As a reader, you will connect with these characters’ lives, both personal and professional.

The story is paced just right for the first book in a series, and you gain much necessary information and details as it progresses. In addition, the author’s descriptions of events, actions, and surroundings are quite visual so that you feel yourself right there with the characters. The scientific terminology is clear and easy to understand and follow. I must also express my thanks for the ending. Even though you’re obviously left in a situation that is to be continued, you feel like you would dive right into book two because Exile gives you characters whose fates you care about and an intriguing storyline that you want to stay with until the finale. Thank you, Sherri Fulmer Moorer, for such an engaging read.
