Fabio Takes a Leap by M.E. Oviedo is a children’s story about a green frog who is sad and thinking about what is beyond his bog. His friends Fenna and Rosie ask him why he looks so sad. He tells them he thinks he’s outgrown the bog and wants to explore what is out there. He believes “there are so many adventures to be had.” But Fabio’s friends think they should all stick together. Against their wishes and driven by curiosity, he takes a leap anyway. Fabio encounters rare animals and magical flowers. But his adventures also prompt him to reflect on the things that matter. Young readers get to leap along with Fabio and find out what he discovers.
This was a charming and reflective story. M.E. Oviedo did a wonderful job telling this story in a rhyming fashion. The storyline and the pacing were well-balanced. It was written in a way to grab young readers’ attention and keep them engaged. The artwork by Maria Andrieiew was soft and warm. They added emotional clarity to Fabio’s journey. I loved how the color palettes shifted from earth tones to more vibrant colors. It almost seemed like this was meant to showcase Fabio’s growth. I was able to identify themes like courage, independence, and connection. These takeaways felt very meaningful. I also enjoyed the addition of the fun facts about the different animals at the end. In my opinion, this story would pique the interest of children, especially ages 4-8. It addressed new experiences and how young readers can navigate them. If you enjoyed similar works like Rachel Bright’s The Lion Inside, then you will find every reason to enjoy Fabio Takes a Leap.
