The book’s introduction outlines its mission to foster a kinder world, promising no punishments, shame, heroes, or villains in the fables—just characters who observe, feel, and evolve with support. This approach transforms familiar tales like The Tortoise and the Hare, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Three Little Pigs into refreshing narratives that emphasize understanding and individuality. Calderon’s reimagined fables shift perspectives in meaningful ways. For instance, in The Three Little Pigs, she highlights each pig’s unique personality and building style, rejecting the notion that one is superior to the others. Similarly, in The Tortoise and the Hare, the tortoise’s careful movement is celebrated as careful rather than labeled as “slow,” challenging the competitive undertones of the original. As a clinical therapist and children’s teacher, I found this book deeply moving and inspiring. Fabulous Fables / Fábulas Fabulosas is simply beautiful. Maria F. Calderon’s gentle reframing of these tales makes them accessible and relevant for modern audiences, particularly young readers. The absence of punitive morals creates a safe space for children to explore emotions and growth. At the end of each fable, the author explains the principles of each story using a Whole-Brain lens. There are also reflection questions for children at the end of each story. I eagerly anticipate sharing this revolutionary collection with my classes, as it beautifully blends nostalgia with an empathetic lens. This is a must-read for children and adults alike!
