Falling UP by Lucinda Brant follows Lisa Crisp, a young woman working at Warner’s Dispensary, who becomes entangled in an incident involving the theft of ribbons and silk garters at Lord Westby’s house. She intervenes to return a valuable auction catalog, witnessing Henri-Antoine Hesham, a gentleman with a hidden medical condition, suffer a seizure. Lisa cares for him, earning his trust. Meanwhile, Lisa reconnects with her old friend Teddy, who is engaged to Jack, preparing to depart on a Grand Tour with Henri-Antoine. Lisa travels with Teddy and Becky Bannister to the Cavendish estate, observing the contrast between her own modest background and the wealth around her. At the estate, social expectations are clear, but there is no denying that the encounters with Henri-Antoine will raise both their heart rates and eyebrows.

Lucinda Brant’s Falling UP is a period romance that is a real delight, with sharply observed characters and a well-paced blooming that can only come from the skilled hand of a seasoned writer. Lisa Crisp’s life is painted with great care and attention, and Henri-Antoine's backstory is robustly shared in perfect alignment with their own personalities. Brant's use of dialogue and setting contributed to the overall story, from city streets to country estates, and a lifted chin and sparkling eye when Lisa is asked her age and playfully refrains from sharing it. The book is geared toward a YA audience, but I, a man of a certain age with daughters who better fit that range, enjoyed it immensely. Falling UP is an enjoyable read, combining careful observation with strong storytelling, and leaves the reader with an appreciation for the world and people Brant presents.

Falling Up by Lucinda Brant presents a whirlwind romance between Miss Lisa Crisp, an orphan reliant on distant relatives, and Henri-Antoine, the influential brother of a powerful duke. Lisa’s decision to help a friend leads to misunderstandings about her character. When she meets Henri-Antoine, he initially mistakes her identity, but she later assists him discreetly during a critical moment, preserving his dignity from those who would cut him off. Despite Henri-Antoine’s guarded demeanor, Lisa recognizes his true character and the man who hides behind a facade. An invitation to her best friend’s wedding brings Lisa into the world of aristocracy and Henri-Antoine’s family. The family treads a fine line of love for Henri-Antoine and what is expected of him. Will the couple find a compromise that makes them happy and is accepted by those closest to them?

Lucinda Brant's Falling Up is the first book in her Falling Series for young adults and offers a fresh take on Satyr’s Son from the Roxton Family Saga. Brant intricately blends romance, drama, and suspense to create a memorable read. The novel explores whether Lisa and Henri-Antoine's relationship can endure social scrutiny, personal pride, and their own issues. The complexity each character faces challenges the very fiber of their love, but their connection is what keeps the story moving quickly through one dramatic scene after another. Each character is well-developed, and together they strengthen each other’s weaknesses. This is truly an intriguing Georgian romance at its finest, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

In the novel Falling UP: An Enchanting Georgian Fairytale Romance… of sorts… Regarding a Beautiful Beast and His Penniless Redeemer by Lucinda Brant, Lord Henri-Antoine lives in wealth and privilege, his days filled with comfort and the freedoms that accompany inherited fortune. In contrast, Miss Lisa Crisp struggles to survive in 1780s London, relying on the kindness of strangers to avoid destitution. Their lives seem irreconcilably distant, yet fate brings them together in an unexpected encounter that leaves a mark neither can ignore. Time later finds them both at a grand country wedding on Henri-Antoine’s family estate, where their renewed meeting sparks feelings they cannot easily dismiss. “She had such a lovely laugh. And a lovely smile. And such beautiful eyes. She was clever and noble and all that was good with the world.”

Falling UP by Lucinda Brant is a brilliant historical romance that brings to life a world defined by social hierarchies, etiquette, and expectations. We see so much symbolism throughout, with items like Lisa’s modest writing box and the luxurious one she later receives, illustrating status discrepancy and her innate value beyond possessions. Henri-Antoine’s “vulgar wealth” paired with refined tastes offers an intriguing perspective on privilege. I love how Brant uses the formalities of conversation, concern for propriety, and Lisa’s quiet modesty to show people wholly within social boundaries. The settings and spaces are depicted with remarkable sensory detail, from silk ribbons and lush gardens to flowing gowns and the scent of spring blooms, creating a fully textured environment. Overall, this is a wonderful work in the Falling series. Very highly recommended.
