Fear Dreams by J.A. Schneider is an interesting psychological thriller with believable characters set in New York City. Liddy is a sketch and book cover artist who is healing from an accident. The source of the accident is unclear at first, as is Liddy’s state of mind as recurring nightmares and visions surround her. The source behind the accident is spat out in bite-sized pieces. Her memory is not 100%, and you wonder if her relationship with her scientist husband is as loving as described. The pace of the book moves at a quick stride, back and forth between Liddy and Detective Kerry Blasco, two women who are determined to discover the truth. When their paths intersect, their similarities emerge instead of their differences. Is Liddy having visions? Did the accident create amnesia or a sixth sense? The investigation of a missing medical student, Sasha Perry, is the common thread, and the desire to fit the pieces together and solve the puzzle keep the reader turning the pages.

J.A. Schneider is an artist at creating characters readers can relate to. They are not perfect. Her style is organic, creating the characters' voices in unique dialogue and realistic character flaws and traits. As in any good thriller suspense novel, the story is woven with several characters who could be guilty or responsible. The setting in various areas of New York City, including Soho, add to the urban feel of the text. The motivation to figure out whodunit and what is real or not drives the reader to discover the truth. If you enjoy trying to figure out the ending of a book and like to be pleasantly surprised at being wrong, pick up J.A. Schneider's Fear Dreams. You’ll be looking forward to the next one. Interesting story and plot line.
