Chekhov once said, “Shyness is the secret of beauty,” and this impression is personified in Feeling All My Shyness by Kim T. S. Friendly, relatable rhymes introduce readers to Kayla, who’s most comfortable when it’s quiet, but does occasionally wish she were more outgoing. She sometimes finds it difficult to say hi first to make new friends and realizes she’s a good listener. In the end, she sees that being timid isn’t a weakness but a part of herself she can be proud of. The difference between being shy and being introverted is also covered. The book also offers some compassionate, everyday tips on how to handle big feelings that remind children it’s okay to take things one step at a time and to ask for help when they feel overwhelmed. With its warmth and positivity, this story reassures kids that shyness, like every feeling, is beautiful and something to be valued and respected.

I was a very bashful and quiet child, so I really related to Feeling All My Shyness by Kim T.S. Everyone around me always tried to get me to be more outgoing, but it just wasn’t me. As I grew up, I realized I am who I am, and that’s okay. As an educator, I feel this book would be perfect for units at the beginning of the year that are often centered on the theme, “All About Me.” From my own experience and from what I’ve observed, reserved children tend to be withdrawn from classroom activities, and reading this story could make them feel more comfortable. It could spark discussions on how students feel that day (or moment, for that matter) or to name a time they felt reticent. I also really appreciate the activities at the end. My favorite one is the “My Strengths Are” page. It’s so crucial for these children (and everyone else) to know their value, and if they can list at least one strength, a teacher or parent can build on that to make them feel more confident. Ultimately, this tale gives shy children the message I wish I’d heard sooner: who you are is already enough.
