Fid’s Crusade is a work of science fiction by author David H Reiss and the first novel in the Chronicles of Fid series. Unusually for the sci-fi superhero genre, our central character is a veteran supervillain by the name of Doctor Fid, whose powerful presence has terrified humanity for over twenty years. When Fid uncovers the threads of a crime, however, his discoveries lead him to a horrifying truth about the real state of the world in which he lives. The protectors and heroes to whom humanity gives themselves over may not be all that they seem, and the incredible truth is that it’s going to take a villain to make humanity face up to the plotting of its so-called heroes.
David H Reiss presents a humorous and intelligently-written take on the superhero genre that’s well grounded in adult thriller and conspiracy fiction. Doctor Fid is a wry and witty presentation, but even as a villain there’s much sympathy to be discovered for him as the events of the novel bring out his past and motivations for his own lifestyle. The plot is filled with twists and well-paced discoveries that allow the reader time to figure out the next part of the mystery without giving too much away. I particularly enjoyed the zippy dialogue that easily holds up to any banter in the popular hero franchises of the cinema and comic book world today. Overall, I’d definitely recommend Fid’s Crusade as an innovative homage to superhero fiction that elevates storytelling for the modern age.
