Finally Home by Cortney Cino is a children’s picture book about the big day when a military dad comes home and reunites with his family. We see the excitement and tension build with the son and daughter as they prepare, drive to the base, and wait in the hangar for what seems like an eternity. When will their father finally arrive? I recently watched the historical drama Taking Chance, and this book emphasizes how important family is. Military life for families is hard, plain and simple. They sacrifice a lot to be part of our national defense, but this book illustrates how it can work, even though the father has been gone for a while. Love, respect, and honor are shown throughout the story, and the ending certainly does not disappoint.
I also loved the artwork by Tim Deberd. In this day of impersonal AI artwork, it is refreshing to see a book with this quality of artwork by a real artist. The watercolor pictures bring the bright details clearly to life and illustrate the pages positively. I can see this book being valued in a military family, giving a child a tool to help look forward to the next arrival of a parent who is overseas, or simply gone for some time. The wave of positive emotions can help support the mental well-being of those little ones who eagerly await their loved ones coming home. Finally Home by Cortney Cino is a wonderful addition to any family in the military.
