Finding the Gift is the second book in Charis Jones’s CRISPR Evolution series, which will appeal to fans of science fiction with a dystopian setting. The story follows the Wakes, who have finally found solace in what they can actually call home in Maine. They live with Howard’s brother, and Howard and Jacqueline focus on their garage lab. Now, Aurie has welcomed two new members after activating ancient god-templates within their genomes. She is caught up in a web of scientific experiments together with her telepathic embryos known as the Fishes, and her brother Py, who has developed exceptional abilities. Py, who works with a colony of ants, is experiencing an unpredictable development and the awakening of his god-like powers. The Wakes must stop the power they have created from hurting humanity. With intelligent ants, alien-like auras, and mysterious forces, now Py poses an even graver threat, evolving into a colony that is quickly becoming a sentient entity. Who and what can stop him?
Finding the Gift is spellbinding, meticulously plotted, and filled with tension. I was pulled in by the imaginative writing and gripping scenes like Py’s surreal journey into the nucleus of the atom in the quest for his CRISPR machine, and Aurie’s desperate efforts to communicate with the awakened gods of the unborn children. Readers are thrust into an off-the-grid world with finely drawn scenes and imagery, and a laboratory that features advanced biotechnology and subatomic particles. Add an alien consciousness to the mix, and you have a world that defies every scientific reality. Charis Jones’s writing is captivating with its crispness and vivid descriptions. The tension grows as you turn from one page to the next, and the conflict quickly becomes phenomenal. This book is a winner for fans of science fiction with hints of the supernatural; well-plotted, original, and unpredictable.
