Firekind by Angela Wren is the first book in a YA fantasy series. Poppy Paquin is 18 years old when she gets dragged into the Twin River by a strange creature. Poppy has no memory of life before she moved in with her mother but she soon discovers that her best friend Thom is part of those memories. The pair is on the run from a danger that seems to shadow Poppy when they arrive in Caelith, a mythical realm under elemental rule. There, they face a much stronger enemy who will stop at nothing to capture Poppy but there is much more to this than Poppy and Thom realize. What will they discover about Poppy’s past? Who is Thom? And why is Poppy being hunted?

Firekind by Angela Wren is a fantastic fantasy story with strong Icelandic inspiration. It has a unique plot with great characters and it grips you right from the start. The characters are wonderful. Our main female protagonist is multi-layered, strong and resourceful yet with a certain vulnerability about her, while the main male protagonist is the strong, handsome protector type you’ll fall in love with immediately. Their story is fabulous but, while many questions are answered for Poppy, there are many more left unanswered – maybe in book 2? Overall, this was an action-packed fantasy that starts in the modern world and leaves you asking yourself if everything you ever knew, or thought you knew, was even true anyway! I am looking forward to the next book.
