Jane Goodall once said, “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play.” That message is one of the main focuses of Fishers in the Forest: The Pacific Fishers in Sequoia and Kings Canyon by Adalgisa and David Nico. It begins with young readers meeting Adele and her dad, who are on an adventure in the snowy wilderness of California’s national parks. They’re searching for the elusive Pacific fisher, a small, endangered mammal. They’re joined by Marisol, a wildlife biologist who explains the dangers of losing their home, the potential toxins they might encounter, and the value of preserving these areas. Along with the narrative, there are facts about forest critters, information on the challenges of climate change, and a glossary of terms. This is more than just a touching read; it’s also an informative book that will surely engage its audience.

As a reader and educator, I really appreciated how Fishers in the Forest teaches meaningful lessons without weighing down the story. There’s a gentle quality to Adalgisa and David Nico’s writing that makes the scientific concepts easy to understand, even for young children. The watercolor illustrations by Andy Atkins feature true-to-life hues and wonderfully detailed scenes. Kids naturally gravitate toward tales about animals, and Adele’s journey lets them picture themselves exploring alongside her, looking for clues and hidden fauna. It could also be used for sparking classroom discussions about endangered species, how to be good to the earth, and favorite woodland creatures. It’s an inviting blend of discovery and empathy, making it the ideal book for young naturalists and their families.
