Fitz of Rage by Andrew Nance and Scott Abrams is a gritty, character-driven mystery set in the colorful waterside town of San Marco. The story follows Geronimo "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a retired detective and struggling private investigator, as he navigates a tangled web of murder, infidelity, political intrigue, and dark secrets. The narrative begins with Fitz witnessing a heated fight between his old friend Rick and a local detective, which quickly escalates into a series of murders involving a senator, a high-profile coach, and various town figures. He reluctantly accepts the case to clear the name of high school football coach Mack Thorpe. He teams up with local journalist Mattie Castro to solve the case and the subsequent murders, but when the killer lures Mattie, Fitz knows his partner could become the next victim. Can he stop the killer before it’s too late?
Andrew Nance and Scott Abrams have crafted a winning crime thriller in Fitz of Rage, with complex characters and a conflict that drives the narrative in unexpected directions. I loved the character portrait of Fitz above all; his wit and quirkiness kept me reading on. The setting captures the charm of San Marco’s waterfront and historic districts. From the busy docks of Doone’s Fish Camp to Senator McGovern's opulent, secret-filled mansion, the locales offer a backdrop for intrigue and drama. The characters range from the tough detective Eddie Schmitt and the sharp-tongued reporter Mattie Castro to the enigmatic senator’s wife, Lucinda, and the volatile Coach Mack Thorpe. I was captivated by how the authors built the mystery around the senator’s murder, raising questions about infidelity, blackmail, political rivalry, and hidden sexual proclivities. The turn of events will surprise you. This crime mystery has strong political underpinnings, memorable characters, and pulsating drama, delivered in an irresistible first-person narrative voice.
