Five Years by Teresa Tennyson is a captivating story about Middlewich, a small town that is cut off from the rest of the world after the Sequestration, an event that happened years after the Change that caused the world to fall apart. There is climate change, few bees, loss of nature, and food shortages, which make life very hard. Elise Farthington, who used to be a senator, is now the new chairman of the select board in Middlewich after the death of Gunner. She tries to bring back stability in Middlewich by managing food supplies, dealing with fights, and trying to balance the ecosystem. As Elise works to achieve her goals, she faces a dangerous threat from Grantham Greene, a power-hungry man who plans to overthrow her and take control of Middlewich. His agenda disrupts peace and unity in Middlewich and poses a risk to Elise's leadership.
Five Years showed what it is like to be a leader when things are very bad and beyond control. Elise wasn't desperate for power but accepted it because no one else could do the job better. I loved how she was able to grow from an unsure leader to a stronger and tougher one. Grantham Greene is a good example of someone who uses fear to get what he wants. Five Years is powerful and filled with strong, silent voices. It shows what it feels like to stay human when everything around us is dying. Some scenes made me very emotional; they were sad moments and moments of hope. Teresa Tennyson's writing style is great. Her ability to create such an insightful storyline shows her expertise and thoughtfulness. The characters were well developed and played their roles seamlessly. This book made me think and reflect on what really matters in a world that is ending—kindness, courage, and staying true to what is right. I recommend Five Years to readers who enjoy novels that cover themes of survival, hope, leadership, and sacrifice.
