In Lisa Cram’s Flow As Water, marine biologist Audrey Grey has spent ten years haunted by her mother’s mysterious drowning. While working at a research station in Washington’s San Juan Islands, Audrey ventures into the Salish Sea with fellow scientist Blake Goodfellow to investigate some reported orca behavior that's unnatural. When the whales attack their boat, Blake is sent overboard. Audrey awakens on a tropical island filled with unfamiliar animals, unable to explain how she survived. There she encounters Sinto, an extraordinary young man she remembers from her childhood, who belongs to the amphibious Merahvu, a people with access to another world called Merluma. As Audrey searches for answers about Blake, Sinto draws her toward a hidden civilization facing a growing threat, where his secrets could alter everything she believes about her family.
Lisa Cram’s Flow As Water is a wonderful science fantasy adventure, with an extraordinary underwater kingdom that I could picture so easily. The imagination behind this place is something else, especially the civilization flourishing inside a vast dome beneath the sea. The characters are wonderfully drawn, too, with Audrey’s resourcefulness coming across beautifully when she memorizes landmarks through an unfamiliar jungle to find her way back to shore. I was particularly touched by Sinto, a young Merahvu whose affection for his younger sister Naiada is genuine. His willingness to share his blood to treat her illness says plenty about the bond between them. The descriptions are gorgeous, from a steaming pool behind a waterfall inside a moss-covered cave to mountainous North Pacific swells engulfing a ship’s porthole. Those scenes put me right there. I wholeheartedly recommend this imaginative adventure to readers who dream of discovering secret civilizations beneath the ocean.
