Fluke Family Curse is the 6th book in the Maynerd Dumsted Saga by Robert A Erickson. Maynerd Fluke Dumsted faces the biggest dilemma yet. It’s been two years since Maynerd was cursed by Nog to die on a battlefield. Now that he is just a few weeks away from his 18th birthday, Maynerd is desperate to find any way to stay alive and keep the people he loves safe as well. While he is not sure of his future, Maynerd is sure of one thing and that is the fight to the death or survival. Demon Nog and King Maremar work hard to bring Maynerd to Luloo Land for the final battle, but Maynerd will only get there with a fight. With Dandy May, Fingis, and others by his side, Maynerd has to work harder, sharper, and be cleverer than before to make sure the curse never succeeds.
Maynerd is an anti-hero with flaws, cracks, and rough edges that are at once endearing and relatable. I absolutely loved Maynerd and it is obvious author Robert A. G. Erickson spent a lot of time perfecting Maynerd’s character. He is young but there is an air of maturity in him to negate that. However, there is an air of vulnerability about him that made him human and I loved that aspect. The narrative style is very modern, something you don’t often find in an epic fantasy novel. The pace is refreshingly fast, the character arcs are well-fleshed out, and the dialogues are crisp. The author adds an ample amount of humor, witty comments, and action to the story, making it entertaining until the end. You will be lost in the pages, holding your breath and waiting to find out what really happens to Maynerd.
