There are books that leave their mark on those who read them both for the story they tell and for the reflections they lead to. Following Our Own Dreams by Kain Carter is one such book. It tells the story of Adam, a boy who grew up in an unpleasant environment. His mother is often drunk, and his father does not take care of him; moreover, he lives in a dangerous neighborhood. His life is not easy at all, and many adventures await him. First, the Banga Boyz beat him up, then he is expelled from school, and finally meets Steve and especially Christiane (also known as Crazy Chrissy), who will bring significant changes into Adam's life.
Following Our Own Dreams is a book that you will read in one sitting. Kain Carter tells a story that is not for the faint of heart, but I am sure it will grab the attention of anyone who reads it. Adam's vicissitudes are told in a clear and direct way (the protagonist tells the events in the first person), and it is easy for the reader to follow his development during his life. Reading Adam's evolution is the most interesting part of the story, but secondary characters such as Crazy Chrissy are remarkable because of their complex personality. Moreover, although there is violence in this story, Carter never lingers on it too much, and the facts follow one another rapidly. Following Our Own Dreams is a book that I absolutely liked, and I highly recommend it.
