Nocola Williams dishes up a charming picture book in Freddie the Flounder Goes to School that is sure to bring a smile to every child and parent’s face! It’s Freddie the Flounder’s first day of school and after loving reassurances by both parents and tips on how to stay safe by his father, Freddie arrives at school suffering from the same first-day jitters as all the other young fish in his class. His new teacher, Ms. Ray, seems very nice and when Freddie confides in her that he wants to learn to count and most of all to read, his teacher bursts his bubble by telling him that before he can read, he must learn each letter of the alphabet and the sound each letter makes. Despite his disappointment, Freddie makes a new best friend, Cayden, and learns the names of his other classmates. More importantly, he soon realizes just how right his teacher was…

Like most children’s books, Freddie the Flounder Goes to School covers a very important life lesson that every child experiences in their lifetime – the first day of school. It’s a day of huge trepidation for most children and, being an educator, Williams’s narrative hits the sweet high notes that come with the first day of school; meeting the teacher, meeting classmates, and making new friends. More importantly, however, Williams is quick to add a sense of the familiar that comes from being read to on the classroom mat, which should comfort and reassure young children learning a new routine.

The narrative is straightforward and age-appropriate and is sure to keep young children engaged. The colorful illustrations by Cissy Langley and Danika Jan Basada provide a feast for the eyes. Each illustration is eye-catching and full of wonderful details that will invite children to identify starfish and clams and all the differences between a regular classroom and one that is underwater. All in all, Freddie the Flounder Goes to School is a great children’s book that is not only a pleasure to read but is sure to soothe a young child’s first-day jitters.
