In Freddy's Colorful Journey: Learning Colors by Allie Compeau we learn that Bo Bear has lost his crayons. He’s very sad. Freddy Fox sets out to find the crayons so that Bo Bear can continue to draw his colorful pictures. Riley Rabbit sees a red crayon on the path. Freddy Fox finds the red crayon and politely thanks Riley Rabbit for helping. Using his imagination, Freddy Fox imagines all the wonderful things Bo Bear can color with just a red crayon. What do you think Bo Bear can color red? Freddy Fox continues on his quest and meets more friends along the way. They all collaborate to help Freddy Fox find Bo Bear’s crayons. Each color he finds sparks more imaginative thoughts of what Bo Bear can color with that crayon. It is indeed a colorful question.
Allie Compeau’s picture book story, Freddy’s Colorful Journey will help young people learn colors, recognize the word when they see it, and learn what things are associated with each color. Each color introduced is followed by a challenge: “Do you see…? along with the color of the crayon that was found. Instead of listing the many things each color is associated with, the author provides illustrations, like cherries for the color red and lemons for the color yellow. With a caring friend like Freddy Fox and so many other animal friends, Bo Bear also learns, as will young readers, the importance of friendship, caring for others, collaborating, and working together. Children will also meet and learn something about some of the animal friends that Freddy Fox encounters on his quest. This is a fun book to share with young readers eager to learn about colors.
