"Freeway Close" by Susan Calhoun is a gritty, realistic and well-developed book relating the literal 'birth' of a serial killer in Los Angeles. "Freeway Close" revolves around three main characters - the killer, Cathy Buchanan, a housewife struggling to hold her marriage together, and Lorraine Johnson, a young, lesbian African-American struggling to find her place in her family and life. The killer stalks, rapes and kills women by taking them to L.A.'s freeway system for access and escape. The fast-paced and suspenseful thriller barrels at high speed through upscale L.A. to the despondency of South Central, in a novel where the killer seems to have no preferences for who he targets or when. Readers will enjoy the inexorable collision of the three characters in an ending that will amaze and enthrall them.

Susan Calhoun certainly knows how to blend narrative, dialog, suspense and action into one well-developed and fast-paced read that gets the heart racing. Excellent, three-dimensional characters pull the reader into the plot with ease. The threads of sub-plots, background and description immerse the reader into every aspect of the Los Angeles environment: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Realistic dialog and a great plot serve the author well. The killer's character draws the reader into the darkest depths of depravity as a twisted individual realizes his true vocation. Often disturbing in its in-your-face reality, the novel nevertheless provides a glimpse into the everyday troubles of 'normal' people who suddenly find themselves the target of a ruthless serial killer.
