In From Bitterness to Reconciliation: Learn to Pull Out the Roots of Bitterness and Find Peace, James Offutt covers several different issues: Bitterness, Forgiveness & Reconciliation, and Conflict. Offutt explains what bitterness is and the four stages that lead us toward it, giving Biblical, personal, and testimonial examples of each part he addresses. He next talks about intentional versus “fake” forgiveness, and how the former is necessary for reconciliation to take place. And finally Offutt addresses conflict: how negative conflict can lead to anger and bitterness, different types of negative conflict patterns - how to recognize them and how to correct them, and positive conflict styles. Each chapter is laid out in an easy to read format for personal or group study, and each ends with a summary of the important points as well as discussion questions.

I think James Offutt did an excellent job writing From Bitterness to Reconciliation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book (most of the time, sometimes it was NOT enjoyable because it reminded me of areas that needed fixing in my own life and that is not so comfortable, even if it is good). I appreciated the different examples from people’s lives and the author’s own life – those really made the concepts come to life in a very convincing way. I have dealt with bitterness in my own life and, though I can thankfully say I am 90% over it, I wish I had had this book earlier on as I think it would have helped speed up the process. I am thankful to have it now. I also appreciated the chapters on negative and positive conflict. I think if I learn to embody the steps James Offutt shows here then my marriage and relationships with others will improve significantly. Very amazing, helpful book. I recommend it highly to all – religious and non-religious readers alike!
