Reut Barak’s Funny Fairy Tales: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a retelling of its classic counterpart. Snow White’s stepmother would always annoy Shraga, the mirror, with her infamous question of who’s the fairest in the land. In return, Shraga would anger her by always stating that Snow White, the king’s daughter, is fairer than her. This sets off a series of events just for the Queen to get rid of her stepdaughter who she sees as her competition.
This is a funny fairy tale indeed! In Funny Fairy Tales: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Reut Barak was able to successfully give this beloved children's story a modern and a little more mature twist without making it bland to the taste. In fact, the retelling is so good it can pass as an original, and that’s not exaggerating things! The humour was not out of place nor was it offensive in any way, despite some adult word choices. You will find yourself turning from one page to another, hungry for what’s to come next. Be careful while reading it in public; you might suddenly burst out laughing! Despite the twist, the author still had a good grasp of the original version. The important bits remained intact. It was impressive how Reut Barak wrote it that way and it seemed very respectful. Having said all of this, it's a book that everyone should read. We all need a laugh out loud moment. Funny Fairy Tales: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can and will take you there, for sure.
