Gay Marriage After Retirement: 25 Questions for Gay Couples to Ask and Answer Before You Marry by Amy Rose Herrick is an excellent guide for any couple, gay or straight, to use in their senior years. Several important points stood out to me. First, financial and emotional compatibility are not mutually exclusive. From the outset, Herrick frames the relationship as foundational to all financial planning work she does with couples. Her discussion and accompanying exercises of debt disclosures and spending habits concretely tackle tough subjects for the premarital period of the relationship. Next, you must understand yourself before committing yourself to another person. Questions 12-17 are useful tools for readers to examine their own finances, credit, income sources, and lifestyle expectations before initiating discussions with their partners about these issues. Last, emotional connection alone does not sustain a long-term marriage. Some of the best advice Herrick offers readers is that if there is financial incompatibility, ending the relationship is in both parties' best interests.
Amy Rose Herrick’s Gay Marriage After Retirement invites thoughtful and honest questions that couples tend to avoid. I appreciated the time Herrick took to develop discussion exercises that couples can use to address complex issues, including emotions, finances, health, family, and long-term expectations. Rather than giving couples the answers to these questions, she has created space for individual clarity, self-awareness, and mutual understanding. I found the exercises can be used as a practical tool to help identify where both agreement and disagreement exist. Herrick’s work left me feeling more prepared to embark on a new relationship. I highly recommend this publication for any senior adult.
