Getting the Best of Harley Wigglestein by Cary Sowers features the seemingly never-ending war between two fifth graders. Although Millie Stillman’s mother has been babysitting Harley Wigglestein since they were babies, they have never gotten along. Millie has had enough of Harley’s bullying. She decides to come up with a great plan to get the better of her enemy, but she finds it impossible to find one that is good enough for her. Every time she tries to prank Harley, the latter pays her back in a worse way. Her repeated failure in trying to teach the bully a lesson and the constant fear of being tricked start to make Millie grow almost paranoid. Will she ever be able to pull a satisfactory prank on Harley Wigglestein?

Cary Sowers' Getting the Best of Harley Wigglestein is a humorous story that captures the struggle of an eleven-year-old kid forced to deal with a prankster. The choice of names here is interesting; 'Still' from Stillman and 'Wiggle' from Wigglestein shed light on the nature of the two girls. This lighthearted book shows the way one tends to make assumptions based on a limited perception of others. It also focuses on how clear communication can help people avoid unnecessary complications. These important aspects of this story can help young readers reflect on their understanding of the people around them and how they can interact with others more effectively. Getting the Best of Harley Wigglestein is highly recommended.
