Ghosts Beneath Us by Kathryn Meyer Griffith is the third book in the Spookie Town Murder Mysteries series. Abigail Sutton and Frank Lester investigate a string of “hauntings” when their friend Myrtle comes to them, asking them to help an elderly friend that claims ghosts are in her house. When other elderly people in the neighborhood report destruction of property and strange noises, Abigail and Frank know this isn't a coincidence. They draw a connection to a corporation swooping in to buy the houses when the owners flee from their haunted homes, but the mystery takes a sinister turn when those that refuse to sell start to disappear. When Myrtle ends up in the middle of it, refusing to sell her land, they know they have to find who's behind the disappearances before their friend is next.
There's a fun, spooky quality that hovers between eerie and the quaintness of a small town. Ghosts Beneath Us finds each of the characters confronted with ghosts, from the hauntings to memories of the past. Myrtle believes in ghosts, and sees them wherever she goes, but Frank is a skeptic that believes there's a very realistic explanation behind the terrorizing. The mystery borders on the supernatural as even Frank is confronted with apparitions and newcomer Kate hears a warning from a ghostly voice. Ghosts are used in several forms: how the elderly in the neighborhood are terrorized, metaphoric ghosts of the past, and apparitions that are left up to the characters to determine if they're real. Kathryn Meyer Griffith delivers a chilling mystery must-read set in the hauntingly quaint town of Spookie, with suspense, friendship, and heart.
