Gift From God by Lori Butierries is an adorable story that all expectant mothers and mothers of children with disabilities will be able to relate to. The book begins with the baby shower of an expectant mother who felt God wanted to give her a gift that she would treasure for eternity. The mother prayed every day and night to have a healthy baby in heart, mind, body, and soul. The mother knew God had heard her prayers and the baby was perfectly made. The mother was heartbroken when she learned about the baby's diagnosis and though all her previous dreams for the baby were shattered, she loved her baby and her dreams were filled with hopes and possibilities that gave her the strength to face the future. With time, the mother learned to understand the needs of her child, and she was grateful and honored that God chose her to be the mother of this baby.
Gift From God tackles the sensitive topic of disability and Lori Butierries handles it with great expertise, love, and care. It is also about acceptance, embracing the unexpected, and how the mother has to change her plans on bringing up her child. A lot of parents will be able to relate to the mother's feelings. The illustrations by Nikolett Timar breathe life into the scenes and the characters in the story. It is a wonderful book that can be used for storytelling sessions in classrooms and homes as there will be many children who have siblings with disabilities. The story gives hope to parents who are dealing with children with disabilities and helps them live life with their children to the fullest.
