GMA On the Go is a lively travel memoir that follows author Donna Dee, a self-described “grandma on the go,” as she sets off on a series of ambitious, self-planned journeys across Europe. The first portion of the book chronicles a long-awaited trip to Italy, where Donna and her friend Terry travel through Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Rome. Along the way, they take gondola rides, visit famous landmarks, deal with a few travel hiccups, and run into plenty of funny moments. The story then shifts to a larger adventure with Donna’s daughter, Taunya, as they travel through Italy, Switzerland, France, England, and Scotland. In both trips, Donna shares what it took to plan everything, how they handled the day-to-day details, and what the experience felt like along the way. From worrying before the trip to feeling amazed, laughing through the chaos, and celebrating small victories, this memoir has a little bit of everything.
Donna Dee’s storytelling in GMA On the Go is friendly, honest, and easy to read. The book moves through her trips in the order they occurred, so it feels more like a collection of real experiences than a tightly planned travel itinerary. The day-to-day details make the book feel genuine. For readers who enjoy true travel stories, the author’s excitement and humor come through clearly. Those elements make the book easy to connect with. The book could be more focused in places, but its strength lies in its relatability – who hasn’t experienced the same hiccups and frustrations that Donna describes? If you’ve ever felt nervous about traveling but needed a little push to go for it, this book might be the encouragement you're looking for.
