Algereida R. Cherry’s Biblical reference book, God In The Soap Opera, is filled with verses and lessons for the television viewer of not only soap operas, but today’s popular reality and entertainment shows as well. Cherry lets the reader know in this collection that God really is everywhere, even in television shows, and there are lessons that can be learned from our favorite characters and plots. The story lines deal with issues that are familiar in everyday life and are also ones that were a part of life in Biblical times. Some of the shows that are focused upon are Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Voice, Jeopardy, Survivor, and Law and Order.
Each chapter begins with a description of the show and the basic plot line. Then the author includes a section that describes how God fits into the show, complete with Biblical verses and text. Each chapter ends with a prayer. One of my favorite television shows, Desperate Housewives, shares accounts of women in the Bible who were desperate and made desperate decisions. Another one of my favorite shows, Gossip Girl, is included as well and the chapter for this show is an excellent discussion of gossip and being judgmental.
I was very intrigued by the title of this book, as I can get wrapped up in the drama and entertainment of television shows. However, I have not really thought about God being a part of these and the Biblical lessons that can be gleaned. This book is filled with numerous lessons that can be learned by readers and each lesson is presented in a new light. This book will really have you watching your favorite television shows with a completely new perspective.
