Goon by Glenn Erick Miller is the story of a foster boy’s penance in an experimental detention center. Troubled and super-sized, Goon is in serious trouble. The theft of a car and joyriding led to his brother being injured, and we see Goon sent to a detention center in rural Florida, where the rules are strict and the days are structured. All Goon wants to do is keep his head down and do his time so he can be reunited with his family, but first he has to prove that he deserves a second chance. The resident bully has other ideas, though. Goon’s work with rescue horses and Trudy in the stables is all he has as he navigates this tough new world, but a vicious attack and a crushing hurricane are about to put him to the test. He needs to use all his skills to get through this, but can he achieve what he needs to do?

Goon by Glenn Erick Miller is a stunning piece of fiction set in a strange world. The main protagonist, Goon, is one of the most fully developed characters I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and his story is one you won’t want to miss. There’s plenty of action and some humor along the way, but it’s more than just a story. This is a lesson on learning to live with your actions and accept the consequences. It’s about growing up and evolving, making friends, and navigating life’s harsh landscape. The struggles the characters face are real, which makes them much easier to relate to, and the fact that it’s written in the first person, in a kind of diary-like manner from Goon’s point of view, makes it easy to read. This is part entertaining and part heart-rending, and it’s guaranteed to break you, but it will also rebuild you into a much stronger person. Highly recommended reading for all ages, and I hope there’s a second book on the way soon. I feel that Goon’s story is far from over.
