Goose Creek: Home is Where You Are by Lee Wardlow is based on the Muscogee clans, Indians that live in the Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Oklahoma areas of the USA. It opens with the tribe matriarch, Halona, foreseeing her own death, but knowing she cannot join Davey, her lost love, until brother and sister Kale and Walker, two of her many grandchildren, marry. One of them will have children who will be very important to the clan, but her visions are incomplete and she cannot tell which of the two it will be. Both Kale and Walker have heartbreak in their past so all Halona can do is pray to The One Above, whom many of the clan accept as the Christian God, that they will find the courage to love again.
Lee Wardlow opens Goose Creek: Home is Where You Are with a brief note that she hopes that she has done the Muscogee people justice in her novel. She has achieved her goal with spectacular success by introducing Lola, an ordinary American girl with a tragic past. Lola’s vivid character jumps off the page and through her eyes a very different culture is seen and understood by the reader. This book intrigues from start to finish, with a huge cast of well-rounded characters and a strong plot. The pace varies but the story never flags. It is a delightful mixture of mystical tribal customs and life as it is lived by Native Americans in the modern world.
