A.J. Lape’s Grade A Stupid is a young adult murder mystery novel. Darcy Walker is not your typical teenager. Darcy is a teen sleuth who frequently gets into trouble while solving mysteries in her small town. When she discovers a dead body in a dumpster near Valley High, her OCD won’t let her rest until she finds out who did it. More dead bodies turn up, and a schoolmate is arrested for it, but some things just don’t seem right. With an overweight jock and the school’s bad boy as allies, she discovers a world of aliases, death threats, gangs, and violence. Darcy will do anything to get the answers she needs while dealing with teenage angst, an overprotective best friend, and seeking justice for a misfit.
A.J. Lape does not disappoint in this murder mystery slash hilarious novel, taking readers on a rollercoaster ride through the life of a sugar-addicted, ADHD-riddled teenager with a knack for getting into trouble. Dialogues between the characters ranged from hilarious to intense. Darcy’s behavior tests the fine line between insanity and bravery. As she unravels the clues, the novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey full of humor, unexpected twists, and the difficulties of adolescence, resulting in a compelling and entertaining story. Despite her unpredictable nature, her close-knit group supports her in solving the mystery. Darcy’s friends demonstrate loyalty and camaraderie even in the face of questionable decisions, whether navigating difficult situations or providing emotional support. This support becomes an integral part of the story, emphasizing the power of friendship in overcoming obstacles and adding a heartwarming layer to the plot. This murder mystery comes highly recommended.
