Katie L. Carroll’s Grammy’s Halloween Scare is an enchanting picture book. It is Halloween, and Grammy and her cat, Jellybean, are scared. It doesn’t help that Grammy lives next door to a graveyard. As can be expected, there are many ghosts and ghouls and frightening sounds outside. How will Grammy react when a creepy crew of these night prowlers approaches her front door?

Grammy’s Halloween Scare is set to the Halloween song “Skin and Bones.” Simple sheet music for a piano or similar instrument is included. This version of the song is much more kid-friendly, in my opinion. Parents, as well as kindergarten and preschool teachers, could use this as a Halloween book, encouraging children to sing along with the “Ooo-ooo-ooo” at the end of each line. Not only does Katie L. Carroll use a simple repetitive story structure that can be sung, but also the “Ooo-ooo-ooo” is surrounded by musical notes to help children know when they can chime in as you point to the notes. I also like that although Granny is wearing a witch's hat and has a black cat and crows that watch over her house, we never get the feeling that she is a witch, plotting to kidnap children or do dark deeds. Her facial expressions are more whimsical and kind. I enjoyed reading the book as an adult, especially for the lovely pictures by Phoebe Cho. The details, such as the pattern on Granny’s blouse, were beautifully created.
