Hang'n with Kasey: I Visit the Zoo is part of a colorful series of books which the author, Karl Christon, hopes will inspire a love for fun and education through books in young children. In this story young Kasey, who lives in the city, is watching animals on TV. He wants to see some animals for himself. Dad has tickets for the spacious City Zoo, so off they go. Kasey is thrilled and inspired as he comes across so many animals he would never normally see: a silverback gorilla, polar bear, big cats, elephants, hyenas, giraffes, seals, rhinos, flamingos, reptiles, zebras and impalas. Kasey knows that many of these animals are endangered species and that we humans need to be mindful of that.
The easy reader-friendly text in this story is written in a rhyming style which children will enjoy. Some pages are colorful pictures, while those with added text do not have too many words. This makes the book ideal for young children who are not yet ready to tackle books with higher word counts. Christon and illustrator Ricky Scott Holmes know the importance of making children’s books attractive and appealing, and the colorful, cartoon-type illustrations in Hang'n with Kasey give Kasey and the animals real character. Young readers coming across this book will definitely want to explore the pages, and the details in the pictures can give rise to discussions about the different animals.
I like the way Kasey knows that some animals are endangered species and conveys the importance of us humans taking care of them in their natural environments. This is an essential point to make and, in fact, the author has dedicated the book to wildlife/endangered species preservation organisations who work with animals in their natural environments. So a fun read for children with an added educational benefit. I would say this is a good addition for any classroom or child’s library.
