Happy Horrible Halloween by Valerie Allen is a sweet book about a girl who comes home feeling extremely upset and horrified about something that happened at school. Aubree confides in her grandma about what happened. She tells her grandma that her teacher declared it a backward Halloween Party for that Halloween. Her grandma tried to understand why the atypical party would upset her so much. Aubree vents her frustration and says she disapproves of the arrangements that day. She says her teacher treated her most unfairly compared to the other children in her class. Her grandmother listens attentively and encourages her to speak her mind. Does her grandmother feel the same way? Or is there more to the story than what Aubree feels?
Happy Horrible Halloween by Valerie Allen is a story with a humorous twist at the end. Valerie captured my attention at the onset because the story starts with a young child coming home crying. The dialogue between Aubree and her grandma is accurately convincing. The dialogue between them displays a typical conversation and reaction of younger children. The story is a fun read as the reader, like me, might feel empathy toward young Aubree. The story is hilarious because of how Aubree behaves. She is overly dramatic. Valerie reveals just enough information at the start until the part where everything comes together. It is a charming story that younger and older readers will enjoy. It is entertaining because many people who have children or are around them can relate to it.
