Hailey likes to eat. That’s a good thing, but it’s what she likes to eat that causes problems. She likes to have a hamburger and fries for lunch. And she loves her candy. When she can’t fit into her favorite jeans or her favorite red dress, when she starts feeling sick after lunch every day and the schoolyard bully teases her about being overweight, Hailey knows she has to do something. She enlists her mother’s help and learns how delicious healthy eating can be. And the best part is that she once again fits into her favorite clothes. Hailey’s mother has a way of making healthy food look exciting and, when the teacher announces a healthy sandwich competition, Hailey is determined to make the best healthy sandwich ever.

Sigalit Benbenishti uses her intense knowledge of naturopathy to help people of all ages learn to eat nourishing and healthy foods. She believes that healthy eating starts at home and children emulate their parents in what they eat. Giving her main character, Hailey, a supportive and helpful mother, the author has created a story that will appeal to all ages and teach young readers particularly the importance and the excitement of eating healthily. The illustrations help carry the story along. The use of real-life scenarios, like the schoolyard bully, help intensify the protagonist’s (Hailey’s) desire to change her eating habits. Introducing a healthy sandwich competition is an inspirational idea and it certainly challenges the main character to put her best effort into preparing and eating healthy food. Super story and great illustrations.
