Summer camp can be fun, but when it’s the first time, it can also be rather daunting. In C M Harris’s Heard, Harrison is a bit nervous about going to camp for two weeks. He won’t know anyone there, and he wondered if he would fit in and be able to make some new friends. At camp, he notices all the different talents and personalities, but what really stands out is one quiet boy, Ethan, who uses a wheelchair to get around. Harrison is used to wheelchairs since his mother uses one. But it’s Ethan’s creative spark that really captures his attention. All Ethan needs is someone to listen to him, to respect him, and to believe in the possibilities of his ideas. Harrison is the first one to really listen, so Ethan feels heard.
C M Harris’s picture book, Heard, is a powerful message about respect and listening to others. The plot follows young Harrison as he prepares for summer camp and enters a new world of unexpected and different situations. His younger brother, Miles, is sad that Harrison is going away, but Harrison is in for a learning adventure where the most important thing he can do is to listen to others. The language is simple, allowing young readers to easily follow along and improve their reading skills. I love the boldly colorful illustrations by Ratu Megawangi, which add another dimension to the story. This is a great way to teach and encourage young readers to value others, to notice and listen to them, and to create a caring space where everyone belongs. Beautifully illustrated and told.
