Hello Outer Space by Amanda Minuk is a picture book that explores our place and position in one of the vast galaxies of the universe called the Milky Way. The book begins with the sun, a star, followed by the individual planets and their unique features. Each is greeted with a "Hello" using ten different languages from some of the many countries on earth. This makes it a combination of learning scientific facts and a language lesson. The sun is at the center of each planet’s orbit, the most notable one for us being the rocky and watery planet called earth, whose unique feature seems to be the fact that it's the only one teeming with life. The book concludes with details of the moon and a summary of the languages used to greet each planet.
Hello Outer Space is an educational picture book that not only teaches salient facts about each of the planets in our solar system but also provides an entertaining way of learning to say "Hello" in several languages. It's a delight to see how Amanda Minuk explains the interesting characteristics of each planet and acknowledges them with a greeting in a different language. The formatting, whimsical fonts, and the use of simple yet appealing illustrations are just right for those who are curious about the planets. The language used is rhythmic and easy to follow, especially for those who are beginning to take an interest in reading and outer space. This is a book filled with joy and wonderment for the inquisitive young mind and a perfect addition to a children's library. A recommended read-along for emerging and independent readers.
