Side Hustle by Wendy Gee is the second book in the Carolina Crossfire series. Investigative TV reporter Sydney Quinn is back on the case, looking for the scoop of a lifetime, and she thinks she’s got it when two paramedics are taken hostage by an ex-firefighter. Sydney gets inside by promising to gather intel, but things take a personal turn when she discovers her friend’s body at the hostage scene. When the hostage-taker claims he was framed, Sydney is dragged into the dark world of corporate corruption and cybercrime, uncovering a network of stolen identities and hackers. It should be easy to take them down, but an undercover mission in Iraq keeps coming back to haunt her. Can she keep herself out of the criminal's spotlight long enough to get the answers she needs?
I read Side Hustle by Wendy Gee as a standalone, although it is the second book in the series. As with any series, I recommend reading them all in sequence to get the best enjoyment. Although I didn’t read the first book, I didn’t have any trouble getting to know the main protagonist, a very strong female lead. I liked how her past experiences played a part in the story, giving it a more personal feel, and this made me feel more invested. The plot was complex, but I found it easy to follow, with plenty of action right from the start. This is one of those stories that will draw you in and hold your attention all the way through. It is a thoroughly enjoyable read. If you love a good thriller, this is well worth a look.
