The importance of the interviewing process cannot be understated, as it poses hiring, retention, and legal ramifications that are covered in this book. Knowing the best and legal questions to ask, effectively structuring the interview, objectively assessing the candidate, and conducting the interviews fairly and equitably are all important aspects of the process that are effectively addressed. The author discusses the many biases that occur, as well as strategies on how to mitigate each specific bias. There is often a concern for “cultural fit” in determinations, and the author has some interesting points worth considering.
The book is very concise, often summarizing important points in tables provided by the author. These tables include common biases, interview types, structuring the interview, interview questions, writing better interview questions, off-limits topics of questions, and samples of follow-up questions. The author also provides an excellent sample rubric usable in most interviews. In addition, the author includes sample interview invitations, letters to inform candidates of delays, and a chart of interview questions showing acceptable and unacceptable, including reasons why they may be unacceptable.
