Nancy Nau Sullivan’s Hot Tango in Argentina opens in a rare stretch of peace as Blanche Murninghan wakes beside Emilio Del Sierra in her beach cabin on Santa Maria Island. She traces the scar on his shoulder, a reminder of the danger they have survived together. Their morning is quiet and intimate, with sunlight peering through the window and an empty bottle of Veuve Clicquot from the night before on the floor. Emilio makes a run for bagels and coffee at Peach’s Bakery, but when he returns, his mood has shifted — worry now sits in a folded letter tucked into his back pocket. The message is from his aunt, Margarita Goyez, long presumed dead and now trapped working on a remote estancia in Argentina under the control of Karl and Gerda Schemmer, a secretive German couple with a sinister past. Before long, Blanche and Emilio are headed to Buenos Aires, wondering what dark truths the Schemmers are desperate to keep buried.

This story is well-crafted with a warm, immersive, and suspenseful style that drew me into both the characters and the setting. Nancy Nau Sullivan’s writing allowed the atmosphere of Argentina to shape the tension, turning culture and history into part of the mystery rather than a simple backdrop. The novel struck a smart balance between heart and hazard, grounding the danger in emotional stakes rather than shock. Fans of Rhys Bowen’s Molly Murphy mysteries or Martin Walker’s Bruno, Chief of Police series would likely appreciate the same blend of mystery and suspense. There was a strong blend of personal stakes, travel, and slow-building intrigue, all tied to a past some would have preferred to keep buried.
