Have you ever wondered why flowers have so many beautiful colors? In How Flowers Got Their Colors by Scott Sollers, that question leads young readers on a magical journey filled with rainbows, dreams, and one very determined shepherd. He longs to bring the vibrant colors of the rainbow to the boring meadow because everything, including flowers, animals, and even his coat, is white. He tries to catch it, but it doesn’t work. After all his attempts fail, there’s an unexpected clue (and an achy knee) that helps him figure out when he should try again and where to wait. With a bucket in hand and hope in his heart, he finally captures the rainbow’s magic and spills it across the valley in a swirl of joyful color.

As an educator, I truly appreciate books like this that blend imagination with timeless values like patience, persistence, and creative thinking. How Flowers Got Their Colors gently shows kids that sticking with something—even when it’s hard—can lead to something truly magical after having a bit of determination and a fresh idea. It’s like the adage: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. The artwork by Alejandro Echavez is bright and cheerful, bringing the rainbow-soaked world to life in a way that feels both classic and magical. It would make a great read-aloud and to begin classroom discussions on weather, colors, or how to be patient. I especially love that the book encourages dreaming big while reminding kids that small changes often lead to something huge. How Flowers Got Their Colors by Scott Sollers is the kind of story that belongs in any classroom, school, or home library. It reminds us that magic can bloom in everyday moments.
