How to Spend Wisely by Kelly Lee is a highly informative book aimed at teaching kids the best way to spend their money. Hank the Hamster lives with his parents in a nice animal town. Hank wants to buy his mom a strawberry cheesecake for her birthday, as well as some things like colored pencils for himself. He goes to the grocery store to find out their prices. Hank soon learns that he only has $10 in his “spend” piggy bank, and everything he wants totals $20. He also knows that taking money from his 'savings' piggy bank is a 'no'. Realizing he can't buy everything, Hank develops a thoughtful plan that helps him pay for the items according to how much he has. This plan doesn’t just help Hank spend his $10 wisely, but it also earns him admiration and commendation from those he loves.
I love this story so much because it takes something as serious as finance and breaks it down easily into a relatable lesson. I found the story engaging, with a simple and well-executed plot that delivers valuable lessons on financial decision-making in an accessible way for young readers. The pacing is steady and suited to its intended audience, allowing them to digest each step in Hank’s decision-making process without feeling overwhelmed or bored. Hank’s internal journey and planning are relatable to children who may face similar decisions about spending their pocket money. Hank's character is endearing, and his challenges reflect everyday dilemmas that even adults encounter. The themes revolving around planning and proper spending are skillfully infused into the plot. The concepts of distinguishing between needs and wants, planning, and saving are well executed and meaningful. It’s a charming and educational tale with vibrant illustrations that add depth and warmth to Hank’s journey. How to Spend Wisely by Kelly Lee is a good resource for teaching financial literacy to kids in a way that sticks.
