In A Second Chance by Asher Frend, Oak Haven teenagers Mikaila Emery, her older sister Kaitlyn, and their best friend Chara Wilson move through the same town under very different pressures. Mikaila believes she has been given limited time to protect Chara after a disturbing dream coincides with a serious accident, while Kaitlyn navigates the same unstable home with sharper scepticism and fewer illusions. When family upheaval separates the girls, Mikaila is drawn toward an older acquaintance who presents himself as trustworthy and devout, gradually embedding himself to destabilize the girls' friendship from the inside. As communication frays and warning signs surface unevenly among the three girls, the bond that once kept them safe is quietly undermined, alternating between the physical and metaphysical worlds.
I love how Asher Frend treats belief as an active practice in A Second Chance. Frend uses Mikaila’s dream to establish a moral contract that frames the entire book, but he does it brilliantly without turning faith into a transactional bargain. Mikaila has a set timeline, and Chara has a second chance at physical life, but, more importantly, at eternal life. Mikaila and Kaitlyn's home life is absolutely heartbreaking, and the girls are subjected to horrifying violence, particularly when their mother, who is meant to be their ultimate protector, does the unthinkable. Frend knows exactly what he is doing here as he starts to draw the story's puzzle pieces into a crescendo. Pretty much desperate for an adult who cares, Asa enters and manipulates the situation. Frend's symbolism is on point in his use of Christian metaphors. Trust me, not the other guys. It's spectacular to see it all unfold. The ending is bittersweet but extremely satisfying, and overall, this is a book worth reading.
