One little girl sets out to discover what it is that makes her beautiful. In Azizi Tuere’s I’m Beautiful Because I Am, this little girl wants to understand the meaning behind that simple statement. She lists all the parts of her body, her hands, her legs, and all that she does and feels throughout the day. These things make her beautiful, as do the simple things she does. For example, the little girl says: “My imagination is beautiful. It helps me draw bright rainbows, pretty flowers, and a happy sun. With it, I create my own colorful world.” The many unique qualities of this little girl make her beautiful, as they make all of us beautiful.
Azizi Tuere’s picture book, I’m Beautiful Because I Am: Valuing Myself and Others With Empathy and Care, is a touchingly sweet story that will warm the hearts of young readers as they learn to accept their own uniquely beautiful qualities. The plot follows a little girl as she explores her life, one day at a time, listing all that is beautiful about her and what she does. The story is magical in its approach to defining empathy and the beauty of self-worth. With simple language and bright, bold, colorful illustrations, also by the author, this gem of a book will help young readers appreciate who they are and all their unique qualities, as well as value diversity, develop friendships, and be caring and respectful of others. At the end of the book is an interactive exercise to encourage discussion with teachers and caregivers. Beautifully presented.
