In 1917, Gabriel Maddox is an elderly war veteran who takes pride in his family legacy. Myles P. Lash's Imminent Peril delivers an engaging novel for fans of well-crafted historical fiction. It is a gripping and richly detailed historical treat for Civil War aficionados. Through the eyes of Gabriel Maddox, a young recruit of the famed Wolverine Brigade of Michigan's 5th Cavalry, Lash weaves history with fiction, revealing the experiences of soldiers and the internal battles they must endure. Maddox’s journey examines being enlisted into the army and the early months of training. Lash’s depiction of his emotional ties to home, his romantic interest, and the fears before impending battles bring a unique perspective to the narrative. This tale cleverly juxtaposes youthful naivety against the horrors of warfare, shifting between two timelines effortlessly.

I enjoyed the structure of Imminent Peril. The author introduces Maddox as a veteran when he signs paperwork that ends his military career and then quickly shifts the narrative to his years fighting during the Civil War. Myles P. Lash offers vivid descriptions of military life, from the camaraderie nurtured among recruits to the day-to-day rigors of training at Fort Wayne. He explores the soldiers' friendships, frustrations, and growth, as well as baseball's role in developing their solidarity. Yet, beneath the joy of friendship lies an undercurrent of tension, especially illustrated through the characters’ responses to trauma and the persistent threat of death. Lash's prose is crisp, and the overall writing is atmospheric. The setting is fully drawn, and readers are transported into a turbulent historical moment. This character-driven narrative is compelling, and Lash’s storytelling skills shine beautifully!
