“The pain is just the start of the healing process.” Immune Heroes is a children’s story by Namita Gandhi. While biking with his sister, Nimi, Mayu fell off his bicycle and scraped his knee. Nimi comforts him. The Army of Protectors led by Captain T, the Helper T cell, quickly comes on the scene. These are neutrophils, or first responders, who access the damage and contact other immune team members. The sticky red platelets arrive next, forming a protective barrier. The wound is getting good treatment until the Staph Microbe bacteria invade. Captain T doesn’t want the wound infected and deploys the hungry Macrophages who devour the enemy bacteria. But Mayu’s knee begins to hurt again and Captain T becomes very concerned when Pseudonomas attack! Will the exhausted Army of Protectors have the energy to fight again?

Immune Heroes is a delightful science adventure cleverly written by Dr. Namita Gandhi, an immunologist. She wants young readers to have fun while learning about science and immunology and I think they will. The illustrations by Tamika Bramwell are beautiful, matching the appealing story as the author describes what happens to a bruise or injury in a very engaging adventure. Children will understand the content while being amused by the lively characters’ antics. Reading this story could have the desired impact on children, enabling them to become more familiar with science and consider it a career choice in the future. Immune Heroes is recommended for school libraries and home reading.
