In the Wake of Evil is an astounding magical fantasy prequel to Stephanie Dean’s award-winning novel The Mystic Vial. The story unfolds in the whimsical, radiantly colorful town of Snickerdoodle, where magical creatures - pixies, fairies, and gorgeous unicorns - live alongside humans. But pixies hate fairies and even have a law that punishes friendship with fairies with death. Eventually, the pixies decide to start a war against the fairies. Peace-loving and kind fairies do not want to fight pixies, and even some pixies are against the war. So, Amethyst, the most powerful fairy, and her secret pixie friend Bartholomew hope to prevent the war. Why do pixies hate fairies? Will the friendship of Amethyst and Bartholomew survive the cruel pixie law? And will they win peace for Snickerdoodle?
In the Wake of Evil enchanted me with the vivid, colorful descriptions of Snickerdoodle, fairies, pixies, and unicorns. Against this backdrop, I enjoyed the story’s evolving conflict between good and evil, illustrated by the old wise parable about two wolves inside us. As the plot thickened, I liked how Stephanie Dean explored drug addiction, same sex marriage, ludicrous laws, and the absurdity of war. I also liked how envy, greed, betrayal, and cruelty contrasted with unconditional love, friendship, loyalty, courage, and kindness. The spectacular, magical combat was riveting, and the story’s peace-loving moral was beyond praise. But most of all, I liked how the final scene contrasted Snickerdoodle before and after the war. This brilliant story will be sure to delight magical fantasy fans.
