The Crucifixion was one of the most dramatic incidents in history, and it continues to cast a long shadow in Daniel Grace’s novel In the Wake of Golgotha. As the book begins, we meet Jude Issachar, a New York social worker and adjunct professor who has a secret; he is the reincarnation of Judas Iscariot. He occasionally feels the need to asphyxiate himself, then save himself at the last minute, re-enacting the moment when the biblical Judas hanged himself. We also meet high-powered lawyer Peter Pheiffer, who happens to be defending a crazed MRI technician who has killed three strangers by crucifying them. The theft of a wallet brings Jude and Peter together. Peter soon becomes preoccupied by terrifying, obsessive thoughts until he breaks down in the courtroom. It turns out that Peter, too, once played a major part in the Crucifixion of Jesus. He’s the reincarnation of Pontius Pilate!

In his novel In the Wake of Golgotha, Daniel Grace proves to be a master storyteller. He sets up the premise by providing clues as to what’s going to happen, keeping readers anticipating what will happen next. He spends as much time exploring the inner world of his characters as he does their actions. They’re consumed by guilt, self-loathing, and feelings of being overwhelmed by forces beyond their control. Above all, Jude and Peter have a sincere desire to redeem themselves. In addition to the weighty themes and plot, the book contains moments of humor; the academy where Jude teaches is called Calcutta Community College. In the Wake of Golgotha is a masterful thriller that intertwines supernatural and psychological elements.
